Dreamy days at the end of summer

My apologies for the failure to post recently. I am waiting for the new year to begin; I sense that huge changes lie just beyond the edge of my vision. Time seems to be moving at a terrifying speed even as nothing in particular is happening. I recall feeling something similar exactly one year ago. Part of my apprehension now is a result of lingering doubts about what took place last year. So please bear with me for the next few days.

It would be interesting to know whether you find Paul Hamm's behavior ethical.

As I understand the situation, Hamm has missed an opportunity to be a good sport. I can understand why the authorities would avoid stripping a medal from someone because of a judging mistake — that makes sense, even if it seems odd to award duplicate golds. I don't see why Hamm, however, would benefit more from keeping a tainted medal than from turning it over to the one who apparently earned it. There is no shame in Olympic silver, after all, and there is far more glory in fairness and magnanimity than in Olympic gold.
