Mind the gap
If New York is the city you don't want to mess with, London is the city you cannot ruffle. It is also well prepared for this sort of thing.
The AP, citing an unnamed American law enforcement source in contact with British officials, has now reported at least 40 deaths.
I enjoyed part of President Bush's remarks from the G8 summit:
On the one hand, we got people here who are working to alleviate poverty and to help rid the world of the pandemic of AIDS and that are working on ways to have a clean environment. And on the other hand, you've got people killing innocent people. And the contrast couldn't be clearer between the intentions and the hearts of those of us who care deeply about human rights and human liberty, and those who kill, those who've got such evil in their heart that they will take the lives of innocent folks.Let's try to keep up that distinction.

I like the spirit of the quote as well, so long as the distinction strengthens our resolve to reduce poverty, combat disease, and take care of the earth, whose sun rises on both the just and the unjust.
What worries me is that this distinction often instead strengthens our resolve to kill those who kill, even though we know that too will mean taking the lives of "innocent folks" in the process. The distinction enables us to divert resources from our noblest tasks to the task of ridding the world of evil hearts. That latter task cannot be accomplished by force of arms; or at least, I have strong and increasingly stronger doubts that it can.

If it really was al-Quida that was responsible, I wonder what the goal was. Maybe they were trying to make Great Britain, a less-than-enthusastic supporter of the war in Iraq, back off from its stance. If so, I can't help but think this is going to backfire on them and how.

An excellent quote indeed.
