Le Jour de la Bastille

Today, le 14 juillet, is the national holiday of France. It commemorates the storming of the Bastille Saint-Antoine, a castle serving as a political prison in Paris, which marks the beginning of the French Revolution of 1789. Just thought you might like to know.

Gee, thanks, Wilson. I suppose next you'll be explaining that Louis XVI was king at the time, his wife was Marie Antoinette, and that they were both guillotined. You will then, I presume, proceed to describe a guillotine for us. Then, if you feel like it, maybe you'll tell us who Robespierre was . . . That'd be great.

I'm a little fuzzy on all of these hard-to-remember details about really major historical events . . .

OK, quick show of hands. How many Americans were aware that this holiday is today, before reading the post? And how many knew the full name of the Bastille?

You are right, of course. Many of the readers here do not need to be told any of this. But I had to find something to say, in addition to "Happy Bastille Day!" Granted, what I posted was lame.

*raises hand* I knew it was Bastille Day. But I didn't know the full name of the castle.

Of course, given my somewhat-lacking ability with historical facts, I'll probably forget one or the other of these by tomorrow.

*wipes dust off historical block of brain* Oh yeah...I never did learn the full name of the castle though. and well, if it doesn't involve numbers other than dates...It's a bit harder to remember and care. But hey, it's still cool.

I didn't even know it was Bastille day...And so, if only so I now know, the post was worth it...

(but, although I didn't know today was Bastille day, I did know the rest of the information stated within. Except the full name of the castle...)
