False Alarm
This is not a real update . . . hopefully I'll have one soon, but I have other things going on at present. Meanwhile, my top ten movies of the spring semester:
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
I wouldn't have expected this many of this years Oscar nominees to make the list, and I'm a bit worried about how it makes me look . . . but they were good films. Crash made last semester's cut, and . . . I really wrestled with whether to put Munich on here. I really liked it, but I . . . I dunno. It could just as easily be in Capote's spot. I was a bit torn. Brokeback Mountain I say was the best of the best picture nominees. It deserved to win.
Anyway, I have a lot more to say, but I'm a bit tired . . . maybe I'll comment more if prodded. There are some really good movies on this list. If you haven't seen them, I encourage you to take a look and see if any of the plots catch your interest.

Posted by: Andy at May 15, 2006 11:41 AMWell, I've only seen 6/10, but those were all good. And I can't recall an instance when your judgment steered me wrong. (Well, there was The Tin Drum, but (a) I never actually saw it, and (b) that one really wasn't your fault.)
Also, *prods*. ;-p
Posted by: Martinez at May 16, 2006 10:34 PMJared, how could a nice mk like you give Brokeback Mountain that good of a rating, yet alone watch it?

Posted by: Andrei at June 5, 2006 11:58 PMYou really didn't like Yours, Mine and Ours, did you? Oddly enough, I found that one rather entertaining in high school. I'm not sure why.

Posted by: asa at June 13, 2006 09:49 PMWell, I finally watched Brokeback Mountain. Sad. I felt it was awkward and somehow wasn´t convinced that they really loved each other... the acting seemed awkward and did not fit. I have several gay friends and they are more natural about it.
I´ll have to admit, I was a little uncomfortable watching the gay scenes, and maybe that affected my impression of the film. But seriously, the ´special features´ option on the dvd kept talking about this ´love story´ but I never got the impression that the cowboys really loved each other, nor did it seem emotional to me. I did think that the film did a good job of showing what happened to the characters´ family lives and that part seemed real to me, how they hurt their wives and daughters. Also, the shame they felt when they did not do well guarding the sheep.
I liked how the film was not too political and I liked the general story, but the passion everybody kept talking about, I didn´t see. Well, who knows, maybe I´m missing something, but I thought it could have been a better movie. (Of course, there were some beautiful shots in the movie ... Wyoming is a beautiful state )
Not that I´m the gay expert... the movie just didn´t sell that idea to me.
