I am in shock. I can't believe what I found in the Nacogdoches Daily Sentinel today.
Gay in East Texas (First in a Series)
I'm not surprised by anything reported in the story. In fact, I was expecting a lot more hatred from the pseudo-Christians that live in East Texas. I would predict at least seventy percent of the people in the surrounding areas who read the story will be pleased that yet another "faggot" is leaving East Texas.
What I find surprising is that the story was not only printed in Nacogdoches (a mere 20 miles from my home) but also placed on the front page. I am curious if people will begin to boycott the Daily Sentinel.
Posted by Randy at January 16, 2005 04:25 PM | TrackBackOn a personal level, who cares if the Sentinel suffers for it? If they consider it a noble cause, then they may martyr their revenue accordingly--and those in opposition to their cause may hang them. But controversy sells papers.
Secondly, there really isn't anything wrong with people boycotting the Sentinel, unless you wish to point at those who might be offended by the story and scream "redneck" like some silly child tattling on his brother in the hopes that mommy will spank him.
Really Randy, this post speaks more of your inherent distaste for the culture of East Texas than anything else. But remember, we must learn to be culturally sensitive

I've often wondered myself about the paradox of having to tolerate the intolerant in order to avoid intolerance. But while I try to figure it out, I have no plans to give them any more credit than they deserve.
Randy, as an East Texan, has the necessary qualifications for expressing justifiable distaste for them and their culture . . . But in this case, he's just calling it like he sees it, and carefully qualifying everything in the post as his own opinion (note the use of such phrases as "I would predict" and "I find surprising") rather than a statement of fact.

I think you misread the intent behind this post. I was attempting to point out the hypocrisy of the great numbers of "Christians" that have surrounded me my entire life. These are the types of people that voice things like, "I hope all [gays] get AIDS and die," and other vitriolic trash but then claim to follow the teachings of Jesus.
While hypocrisy does happen to be a facet of East Texan culture, I wasn't attempting to mock or show my distaste of it in the post. If you ever really want my opinion, however, feel free to ask.
