In my research of the Donner Party I have discovered...
They were dying to get to California, but bit off more than they could chew. They became starved for human contact. They were living hand to mouth, who can abolish human nature? Their story may be hard to swallow, but if you were there you'd have realized hunger was afoot given them a hand.
Also, we plan to pond Ardith that we may discover if she is indeed a witch. If she escapes, she will be a small medium at large.
